Fall foliage

SUNDAY- September 18, 2011

The days are definitely getting cooler. Friday was 47 degrees F. Saturday was 67 degrees F. And today is 62 degrees. While sunny, it is definitely a change from two weeks ago. The fields are browner, the golden rod is hanging on and the fall asters of purple and pink, with the smaller white fluffy asters are blooming. Gardens are showing their last colors, as the trees start to color up. The tourists are fewer, things seem calmer. The frenetic pace of summer is over.

This weeks Sunday Special is the Laura Ashley red toile French look fabric. This did come in with a flaw, and is already discounted. This week, if you want it, you get a double discount! Enjoy!

A BIT ABOUT THE FABRIC INDUSTRY

Something came up this week that should be clarified. A person wrote about the Fern Toile Fabric. She had gotten a sample of it about 2 years ago, and had held onto it until now. She had trouble finding it locally. She finally googled fern fabric, and landed at Brick House Fabrics. We had bought the last bolts available a couple of years ago. I had gone to re-order, and it had been discontinued, and all stock had been sold, except for two bolt, which we bought.

The point is this. The home dec fabric industry runs on two things… what the upholstery or home decorating industry wants being the main one, and what is selling. They do not keep a fabric running if it is not moving. The average time for a fabric to run is 3 years. The chair manufacturers get it out, people see it in a showroom or magazine, retailers move it, and then a pattern will start to slow in sales. While this is going on new patterns are being produced. Most manufacturers bring out new patterns two to three times a year. So, the competition to stay popular is fierce.

There are patterns that are timeless, that remain popular… but there are also patterns, that when shown to the chair industry cause no interest. They can be dropped from production within three months.

So, if you see a fabric, and you like it, do not assume it will be around in years to come. With the economy, chances are it won’t be.

Where fabric is concerned… seize the day! Carpe diem…
