The sky is blue, and when I went out to feed them I heard a white throated sparrow calling! Usually we don’t hear them until March!

I went out this morning to throw bread to the crows, but one of our melanistic squirrels got there first, and scoffed most of it up! The grey squirrels never even look at bread. We have three melanistic squirrels living here. They are all slightly smaller than the normal grey squirrels. One has moved into what we call the apartment in a large maple tree right outside of the kitchen. She is out promptly in the morning, before the grey squirrels show up, and again after they leave for the day, as they chase her away from food.

MELANISTIC SQUIRREL

The squirrel above is very recognizable as she has quite a lot of reddish fur on her tail and back. Though rather shy, the minute one goes inside after putting out food she is looking to see what was put out!

Even though we are surrounded by oak trees there are years when not many acorns fall. We feed the squirrels sunflower seeds and in the shell peanuts, along with a bird food mix that is heavy in large nuts and some fruit. We don’t do a large fall clean up as one can see the squirrels gather mouthfuls of oak leaves to line their nests with in the spring. Basically- we run a squirrel preserve!

As the last day of the holidays winds down, it is nice to take it easy after all of the excitment of the last month! Taking a deep breath, and looking around there are still decorations to come down, but it still feels nice to mentally unwind!

This week’s goal is to get quite a few fabrics up and running. There are two new ocean fabrics, two new toiles, a new bird of paradise floral, and one last French fabric as well. We will be working on those tomorrow.

We also will be re-organizing the Schumacher, Scalamandre, and Clarence House fabrics, moving them into new quarters. There will probably be some long lost things found, so stay tuned for those as well!

In the meantime, enjoy the day! We will be back tomorrow with the new discounted fabric for the week, and other news!

MONDAY- January 2, 2012

It was 45 degrees F. at dawn this morning. It is hard to imagine it is supposed to be zero tonight! But, the temperature is falling already! We have one pine tree that is very tall, reaching up above the surrounding maples and oaks. It hasn’t any limbs, just this absurd burst of branches at the top. In the winter, when the leaves are gone from the surrounding trees it looks like a tall, northern palm tree! We call it the palm tree pine. When wind blows it sways in a circular motion, and one can see how windy it truely is!

The last of the new French fabrics has been listed. It is a musical fabric, with violins, trumpets, sheet music, lyrics, and an invoice from an Edinburgh, Scotland instrument shop, to Lady Nicholson for the hire of a grand piano, dated March 12, 1813!

MUSIC TOILE FABRIC
with Scottish documentary prints

See the new
Scottish music documentary print fabric
in the
Documentary Print Fabric category.

Also listed today-
a destash piece of the plaid feather fabric.
This is an end of bolt piece, 30″ in length, with minimal wrinkling.
Yardage is available as well.

PLAID PHEASANT FEATHER FABRIC

This is available in the
Bird Fabric category

A piece of the Stroheim & Roman blue French toile fabric
came to light.
This is a 60″ piece, the last there is of this.

STROHEIM & ROMANN FRENCH COUNTRY TOILE

This came in flat folded and is priced to move.
It is in the
Country Toile Fabric category.

A piece of one of the most unique fabrics showed up.
This is a Kravet fabric, with African cave animals!

AFRICAN CAVE ANIMAL FABRIC

Rows of animals alternate with bands of geometric motifs.
There are mammoths, jackels, rabbits, and deer.
See it in the
Exotic Animal Fabric category.

This week, as we start the yearly inventory there will be more destash pieces listed.
