One can walk around a garden and see new things breaking dormancy daily. The plants took a beating this winter with the huge swings in temperatures. Fluctuations from freezing to 80 degrees F. and back down again to below zero have taken their toll. There is a lot of winter kill and blasted buds.

ANEMONE RANUNCULOIDES

One of the early woodland plants is Anemone ranunculoides. Do children still do that? We took them home the day before May Day to fill with flowers for our mothers. The lily of the valley were always up by then. They were in a dark corner on the north side of the house, and filled the air with their perfume.

In Maine the lily of the valley leaves have not even come up yet!
