This weekend a friend and I decided to drive up the coast to get some fresh air… a Get out of Dodge, \u00a0if you will. North of Camden we stopped where I like to stop for Spot. \u00a0Here a small river reaches the Penobscot Bay.<\/p>\n

\"Maine<\/a><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Tide was in. And a pair of loons was cruising in the tidal water.
\nNormally by now they have moved to an inland lake to have their babies.<\/p>\n

\"Maine<\/p>\n

Their shape is unmistakable!<\/p>\n

\"Maine<\/p>\n

We watched them for a while,
\nand I heard my first “cry of the loon”!<\/p>\n

As we turned to leave we saw something moving in the water outside of the inner pool.<\/p>\n

\"Immature<\/p>\n

It was brown, and moving with a lot of thrashing-
\nI thought it was an injured seal.<\/p>\n

\"Immature<\/p>\n

\"Immature<\/p>\n

As it neared the shore it was obvious it was not a seal,
\nbut it was impossible to discern what it really was.<\/p>\n

\"Immature<\/p>\n

Suddenly we realized there was a bald eagle in a tree nearby!<\/p>\n

\"Immature<\/p>\n

We realized it was a bird.
\nWe thought it was injured, and had been thrashing in an effort to get to shore.<\/p>\n

\"Immature<\/p>\n

We were wrong.<\/p>\n

\"Immature<\/p>\n

It was a juvenile bald eagle!
\nAnd, it had a fish.<\/p>\n

\"Immature<\/p>\n

The other bald eagle just sat, as the one in the water came onshore.<\/p>\n

\"Three<\/p>\n

We suddenly realized there was a third bald eagle in another tree
\nabove and left of the first we saw.<\/p>\n

\"Immature<\/p>\n

This bald eagle shows the white splotches of an immature bird.
\nThe one on the ground is pure brown, indicating he is much younger.<\/p>\n

\"Immature<\/p>\n

Suddenly both of the birds in the trees took off.<\/p>\n

\"Immature<\/p>\n

One sees how their plumage is great camouflage.<\/p>\n

\"Immature<\/p>\n

They quickly disappeared among the trees.<\/p>\n

\"Immature<\/p>\n

Their wingspan is impressive!<\/p>\n

\"Immature<\/p>\n

The eagle on the ground concentrated on his meal.<\/p>\n

\"Immature<\/p>\n

Three crows appeared, drawn by smell.<\/p>\n

\"Immature<\/p>\n

He did not wish to share.<\/p>\n

\"Immature<\/p>\n

When we left he was vigorously defending his meal!<\/p>\n

This episode was so unexpected-
\na serendipitous event of two people, who enjoy nature,
\nbeing in the right place at the right time.<\/p>\n
