The end of the summer is here,
\nthe nights are cooling down,
\nand, after a summer that has been very, very dry,
\nrain has returned.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

And sunflowers seem to be everywhere.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

As the seeds develop,
\ntheir heads start to nod-
\nanother sign of the end of the summer.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Hay rolls dot mown fields.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Other fields are yellow with goldenrod.<\/p>\n

Milkweed is an important host plant for monarch butterflies.
\nTheir leaves are turning yellow.<\/p>\n

And the seed pods are ripening.
\nIn a month or so,
\nthey will burst open,
\nspilling their seeds.
\nThe seeds are attached to what is called a coma,
\nwhich allows the seeds float on the wind.<\/p>\n

The monarchs have not left yet.
\nThey fuel up for the long trip on the nectar
\nof sun loving flowers.<\/p>\n

They love tithonia!<\/p>\n

There are three in the pictures below,
\nthey walk around the central boss,
\nwhich is an assembly of small yellow flowers,
\nfeeding from each of them.<\/p>\n

On August 1 I took my annual trip to the top of
\nMount Battie,
\nabove Camden.<\/p>\n

Where water and sky meet there is a slight haze.<\/p>\n

In Camden the harbor is full of boats.<\/p>\n

Down on The Point,
\nas the Pemaquid Point is known,
\nthe sea can be dramatic.<\/p>\n

\na lone sail is visible in the glow of the setting sun.<\/p>\n

When I think of the pictures I have taken over the years,
\nI have to admit- I see the romantic side of Maine.
\nI live in a small community,
\nsurrounded by nature-
\nwoods, meadows, lakes, and ocean.<\/p>\n

And, every season has it’s beauty.<\/p>\n

Around August 1, one hears people saying,
\nit’s over,
\nmight as well get out the snow shovels.<\/p>\n

Well, a sentence in one of Craig Johnson’s Longmire books,
\nwhich I could not find to quote,
\ncomes to mind-
\nthe gist of it is:
\nWinter was coming, it was time to see the fall.<\/p>\n
