This past weekend was an absolutely weekend in Maine. It was the kind of weekend that makes visitors decide to buy a house here, and move!<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

On Saturdays I cut fabric, ship it, go to the market, do the bottles, and go to the dump. This weekend I did that, stopping at a farm stand on the way home.<\/p>\n

I had a full day of paper work to catch up on. But, after unloading the vegetables from the stand, and getting a load of blueberries into the freezer for the winter, I decided enough! It was just too beautiful- a perfect Maine summer day. So, I loaded Spot into the car, and away we went.<\/p>\n

I decided to head down to Boothbay Harbor. We made a small detour so Spot could swim, stopping at Knicercane Island where there is a boat launch- perfect for running into the water after sticks!<\/p>\n

The island is a small park, with tables, and is little used for the most part, except by boaters and kayakers who launch from it. But, it is a pretty spot, with sea lavender growing at the water’s edge.<\/p>\n

After a quick dip, we headed down to Newagen, at the end of Southport Island. Southport is in the mouth of the Sheepscot River, and is around the corner, so to speak, from Boothbay Harbor. A swing bridge connects it to the mainland. The road runs around the island, and there are not many views of the water while driving. But, at the end of Southport is Cape Newagen. And at the very end of the island is the Newagen town pier.<\/p>\n

It was a glorious day!
\nThe sun was out,
\nthere was a slight breeze rippling the water,
\nand pushing the clouds along.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The water sparkled.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The tide was high, nearly slack.
\nSeaweed floated gently near the retaining wall.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Newagen Harbor was filled with boats.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The town pier looks right out to
\nthe Cuckold’s Lighthouse.
\nWater was breaking over the surrounding ledges.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

There was an unusual amount of boat traffic,
\neven for a beautiful day in August.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

I suddenly realized there were some very big boats out there!
\nTwo of them with jibs flying!<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

These boats were really moving!<\/p>\n

It turns out that this past weekend was the Shipyard Cup Race.
\nThis is a race for super yachts,
\nsponsored by Hodgdon Yachts in East Boothbay.
\nIt is for boats that are over 70 feet in length.
\nAnd there are only eleven of these races held world wide.
\nThe longest boat entered this year was a yacht from Holland,
\nthe Marie, which is 180 feet in length.
\nTo see boats that large out there racing, on such a wonderful day, was very special!<\/p>\n

So, if you are ever in Boothbay Harbor,
\ntake the time to drive down to Cape Newagen,
\nand enjoy the view!<\/p>\n

One never knows what one will see!<\/p>\n
