In late August one suddenly becomes aware that the season is changing. Summer is coming to an end. What one takes for granted in July- sparkling water, the clear greens of trees, clouds floating in a summer sky, all subtly change.<\/p>\n

Single small fall colored leaves go nearly unnoticed.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

It is only when one sees the first trees with red leaves
\nthat one becomes aware of the late summer changes.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And then one suddenly starts seeing signs of
\nfall all around one.<\/p>\n

Apples are ripening in old farm yards.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In marshes cat tails have suddenly become full and furry.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In the hedgerows ripe berries gleam
\nagainst a backdrop of yellowing leaves.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

And mushrooms seem to pop up everywhere!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

One often sees caterpillars looking for
\nplaces to hibernate.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In late August the meadows have a dusty hazy look.
\nGrasses and pines start looking drier, dustier, as they yellow.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The breadth of the meadows, the smell of the grasses,
\nthe sound of the river, and the smell of the water surround one with the sense of peace.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Late flowers continue blooming,
\nnearing the end of their cycle.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Queen Anne’s lace adds a fairy tale look!<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Fields are filled with stands of milkweed.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Host for the monarch caterpillars,
\nat this time of year their flowers serve up nectar to
\nmonarch butterflies as they migrate south.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

The river can be glimpsed through the trees.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

A boat house floats above its reflection in the nearly full tide of the river.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In the late afternoon the sound of cicadas is a background sound on the meadows.
\nAbove, the honking of geese migrating is heard.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

For Spot every tree
\nneeds to be investigated for squirrels.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

In the woods a thick layer of duff from fir trees
\nsoftens our walk, and quiets our steps.
\nFrom the river comes a cool breeze,
\nthe spicy scent of the firs wafts through the late afternoon air.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Back in the meadow the air is filled with
\ndragonflies and small sulfur butterflies.
\nThe dragonflies fly in circles, sometimes as many as twenty at a time!
\nThe sulfurs flit over the flowers
\noften in pairs… too fast to photograph.<\/p>\n

The scent of clover fills the air in last warmth of the day.<\/p>\n

A late summer evening infolds the meadows in shadows,
\nas we head home.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n
