Toile de Jouy Fabric

Toile in French means fabric. So, when a person asks for a toile fabric they are actually asking for a fabric fabric!

Toile de Jouy means fabric of Jouy. Jouy is the town outside of Paris where the manufacture of printed cotton fabrics was first sanctioned under the aegis of Louis XVI, after having been banned for years. Many of the Toile de Jouy patterns are historical, which is why one sees so many different companies with the same pattern, in different scales and color.
