Maine in August is beautiful! The sky is blue, the water is blue. And the air is warm. Nights, though, begin to be cool. As schools start earlier than they used to the traffic thins, as families head home to get ready for the school year.

Last night when we went to bed it was dark at 8:00. On June 21, 2011 sunrise was at 4:55, sunset at 8:24, and there were 15 hours, 29 minutes of daylight! Today, August 21, the sunrise was at 4:48, sunset is at 7:35, and there will be 13 hours, 47 minutes of daylight. That is 1 hour and 42 minutes less of daylight. While those are the actual facts, the truth is that in June it is nearly light at 3:30 A.M. so the day feels much longer!

No matter, the point is, the seasons are changing. So, enjoy the days that are left of your summer!

MONDAY- AUGUST 22, 2011

Well, it is absolutely pitch black, and pouring rain. There is one window in the kitchen partially open, and one can hear it sheeting off of the roof… Good day to curl up with a book, if one is in vacation land (Maine) as it is not fit for man or beast out there! It is definitely windy, so maybe it will blow through.

TUESDAY- AUGUST 23, 2011

The wind came up, and blew things out, and this morning it felt as if it were fall! A high had moved it- clear, sunny, and a bit of a chill. The tops of the ashes, which lose their leaves first, are beginning to look a bit thin.

JUST LISTED:
An embroidered Fleur de lyse fabric.
This is oyster white silk, and it is beautiful! A trellis of embroidered lines forms a grid of diamonds. And within them are fleur de lyse. A classic look, perfect for Renaissance or Medieval lovers. And it is supple enough for clothing, for all of you Ren Ware Fair lovers!

Just read about the earthquake in the mid-Atlantic states, via Etsy forums, via Twitter, via CNN- we did not feel it here.

Getting very cloudy with fog.. so much for the high of this morning!

WEDNESDAY-AUGUST 24, 2011

It turns out that the earthquake yesterday WAS felt in Maine. The U.S. Geological Survey said the quake struck at 1:51 p.m. at Mineral, Va., 87 miles southwest of Washington and at a depth of 3.7 miles. The quake was the state’s strongest in 114 years- a 5.8 magnitude quake. Because the earth’s crust is old compressed rock on the east coast, as opposed to moving plates, the earthquake’s shocks travel farther. It was felt in the southern part of the state. People in Lisbon and Auburn felt it.

I wrote a rep down outside of New York city. He said he had been on the phone with a secretary in an office in the city, when she started screaming that they were having an earthquake. About that time he said he felt it! As he said “weird”.

COLOR FORECAST Speaking about reps. Brick House Fabrics got some new samples. What is interesting is the colors that dominate the palate… muted tones of aqua, orange, and raspberry with some buff and avocado are used a lot, as is pale grey to calm things down. There were some things that we look forward to ordering!

SHORT SUPPLY The Thibaut Oriental horse toile on pale blue is down to two yards. There isn’t any re-order. We have discounted it… get it while you can…

THIBAUT ASIAN HORSE TOILE FABRIC

This is available in the Asian Fabric category.

THURSDAY-AUGUST 25, 2011

The leaves were rustling so hard last night, I thought it was raining.. but it is Irene on her way north, pushing the wind before her. The sky is an odd yellow-grey.

The wind finally blew in a huge storm… rain is pouring, and the thunder is rolling!

SATURDAY-AUGUST 26, 2011

Well Irene was downsized to a category 1 hurricane this morning. So, am betting when she arrives here it will be a lot of water and wind. This morning there was a hot fog without any wind. That burned off, and it is sunny and humid, with a slight breeze. The odd thing is there have not been any birds around at all. Cicadas are singing, but that is all!

JUST LISTED: An end of bolt piece- 44″, of the indigo blue Ikat fabric. This has wrinkles, and an end of bolt line imprint, where the fabric ended on the bolt. This is an upholstery weight woven fabric. It is the closest we have seen to a true ikat fabric.
