Week of December 19, 2016

Well, we all know the song…
“Well, the weather out there is frightful…”
and this week New England got a taste of true winter weather.

On Thursday around 2 pm the wind picked up.  And the temperature began to drop. And, boy did it drop… It went from 41 degrees F and was around 0 degrees F. by 5 pm, with a howling wind.

The wind comes right off of the hill in back of the house, and slams into it. It was a loud, noisy night. Christine, in Hawaii had placed an order for the new pineapple fabric.

She said she was cold, as the temperature had dropped to 68 degrees F. I sent her warm thoughts, as the wind howled, and the temperature continued to go down!

By morning it was a chilly -12 degrees… and still windy. The wind died down in the afternoon. And we all prepared for the next segment of the weekend weather- snow. By late afternoon the clouds were rolling in. And by morning we had several inches of snow, with freezing rain.

While freezing rain is beautiful, it is deadly… everything becomes a skating rink. The plow guys had plowed three times during the night… and they arrived to sand heavily at 7 am.  The rest of the day we sort of hunkered down, as we waited for the thaw that had been forecast.

On Sunday the temperatures was up into the 40’s, and the wind once more picked up, which helped to dry things out. Everyone ran out to do errands, and by dusk, the temps were falling again.

This morning the driveway is dry, coated with sand, the snow is icy, and the sun is out, the thermometer stands at 14 degrees. F, but the air is still.

This has indeed been a roller coaster!
