Week of June 1, 2015

Spring and summer have merged together this year! Tulips are still blooming, and the lilacs are early, spring ephemerals are in bloom with buttercups and the first day lilies. We do not remember a spring like this!

I have always loved Rembrandt tulips. The true historical Rembrandt tulips have broken coloring. This is caused by a virus, which the Dutch have taken great pains to wipe out. The tulips that most bulb companies call Rembrandts are tulips that have been bred to be flamed with colors but do not have the virus. Years ago I planted some purple tulips that returned year after year. At some point they moved from a solid purple to a broken flower of purple and white. I was fascinated by this.

Last year I was able to buy some
historical broken tulips from
Old House Gardens
in Michigan.

TULIP SILVER STANDARD

Tulip Silver Standard
dates from 1760.

It is probably one of the most awesome tulips
I have ever seen.
It is truely glorious!

In my garden it is a clear and beautiful
strawberry red with a heart of yellow.

I hope to get pictures of
some of the other tulips as they bloom.
We have five days of rain in the forecast,
but hopefully there will be some periods of sun.
