Week of May 1, 2012

Spring comes to the North! Still cold and blowy it is definitely heading into spring! Every day one can walk around a garden and see new things breaking dormancy.

MONDAY- April 30, 2012

This weekend was amazing- freezing temperatures, howling winds… But today dawned clear, not quite as cold, and with less wind. One can walk around a garden and see new things breaking dormancy daily. The plants took a beating this winter with the huge swings in temperatures. Fluctuations from freezing to 80 degrees F. and back down again to below zero have taken their toll. There is a lot of winter kill and blasted buds.

ANEMONE RANUNCULOIDES

One of the early woodland plants is Anemone ranunculoides. It is an ephemeral- dying back in the summer. But it’s early spring flowers are a cheerful addition to the early spring landscape!

There are a lot of things to list this week– the last of the found tropicals, and a lot of destash pieces as well.

TUESDAY- May Day, 2012

HAPPY MAY DAY!

Thoughts of weaving paper baskets in first grade always come to mind on this day. Do children still do that? We took them home the day before May Day to fill with flowers for our mothers. The lily of the valley were always up by then. They were in a dark corner on the north side of the house, and filled the air with their perfume.

In Maine the lily of the valley leaves have not even come up yet! But, violets are available for picking…

WEDNESDAY- May 2, 2012

One thing that is interesting about my job is getting to know people. One person this morning wrote me that no one she had ever bought fabric from had ever emailed her… but, communicating with people is part of what life is about! Many of the people who buy fabric from us we hear from over the years, often about things other than fabric!

A case in point is Sabina. After reading yesterday’s blog post about lily of the valley, she very kindly sent me this picture!

Sabina wished that she could send their scent as well!
Thankyou, Sabina!

On another note, Sabina sent pictures of a coat she made
out of the Victorian tropical chintz fabric.

It dawned on me today that Memorial Day weekend is not far away- where does time go?

Meanwhile the cold, grey weather in the northeast hangs on. But, for those who crave a warmer sense of being we are still listing tropical fabrics! At least for the next few days.

Two pieces of the bright, beautiful Schumacher orchid fabric are listed. Bright and bold flowers are balanced by a delicate lime green toile of plants and butterflies. One is flat folded, one not.
